Now living in Los Angeles, Alex Nussbaum used to make his living in Toronto by designing characters and locations for such animated television programs as Bob & Margaret, Franklin the Turtle, and The Magic School Bus. Drawing by day and joking by night. Much like a superhero, if you will. Please do.
Deciding that it was time for a change, he resolved to make an honest woman of stand-up and elevated his part-time commitment to full-time status. Soon after, Alex rose to the top of the Canadian comedy scene, confirmed by his Canadian Comedy Award nomination for Best Male Stand up as well as being chosen #1 Comedy Show of 2006 by Now Magazine, Toronto’s chronicler of the comedy scene. As a stand up comic, his uniquely silly yet clever style has a universal appeal which prompted Now Magazine to ask, “Why isn’t Alex Nussbaum a star?” Alex's mother and landlord are both inclined to agree.
At one point, the Canada TV People gave him his own hour-long nationally televised Comedy Now stand-up special for CTV and The Comedy Network. He also happened to appear on CBCs The Sean Cullen Show, ABC Family Channels This Time Around, CTVs Comedy Inc., Much Musics very popular, Video on Trial, and some film called It's a Boy Girl Thing. As well as touring regularly as a stand-up comedian, Alex also spends his time writing on animated programs including Total Drama Island, 6teen and Untalkative Bunny. Also, let's not forget that he wrote sketch comedy for CTVs Comedy Inc. Currently, Alex is in the process of shopping around a couple of screenplays and TV animation pitches. It's good to keep busy.
Alex has appeared numerous times at the prestigious Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival in Montreal - mind you, not against his will. His involvment in the Homegrown Competition got the attention of The Hollywood Reporter who named him as a “face to watch”. He has since noticed people watching his face. Alex has also performed at the Vancouver International Comedy Festival and returned to Just for Laughs to tape a Gala show hosted by Jim Belushi which has aired on TV around the globe. Most recently, Alex was invited to perform at the Los Angeles Comedy Festival, thank goodness.
“He's always been a nimble physical comic... but his act has matured and gone to astonishing places. Nussbaum can find the funny in seemingly incongruous things. He's stand-up comedy's great lateral thinker.”
“I’m not much of a laugher, which may be odd for a comedy reviewer… Still, about once a decade I’m good for a bout of giggles I can’t stop…. The routine gave my face a real workout. Laughing hurts. At least it can rest for another 10 years.”
